Medieval Chant. Trio Mediaval

Norway-based vocal Trio Mediæval has been among the elite of early music interpreters for almost three decades. The trio's repertoire is surprisingly diverse, combining historically informed performance practice with a commitment to exploring the most ancient layers of Scandinavian folk music and contemporary jazz expressions, as well as indulging in the joy of improvisation and specially commissioned interpretations of new compositions. In concert at St Peter's Church in Riga, the ensemble, founded in 1979, will bring pages of timeless beauty from the 15th-century Oldhall manuscript, wrapped in legend, to the audience. This richest collection of English medieval sacred music had been lying forgotten for more than four centuries until its accidental discovery in the late 19th century sparked an avalanche of interest in these sonorous treasures of cultural history. And alongside them are “commentaries” inspired by this manuscript, written by contemporary composers specifically for the musicians of Trio Mediæval a couple of years ago: the meditation Alleluia Amen by the famous American post-minimalist David Lang and Sol lucet by the Norwegian composer Marianne Reidarsdatter Eriksen, who specialises in vocal music.
