Sinfonietta Rīga. Haydn's London Symphony and Vasks's Concerto for English horn

The music of Pēteris Vasks builds cathedrals of nature for the seekers of spiritual consolation. With his concerto for English horn's dark, mellow timbre we finally welcome Dominik Wollenweber, the soloist of the Berlin Philharmonic, to Riga. Maestro Claudio Abbado once  praised him as the all-time best player of English horn, and everyone who has been lucky to witness Wollenweber's amazing technique and deep emotional immersion in the heart of the composition, would agree. In his turn, Heiner Goebbels, the father of German contemporary theatre, delves deep into the historical industrial soundscapes of Berlin, New York and Tokyo, exploring them with archaeological precision. Next to these contemporary finds - the joyful harmonies of Viennese Classicism, represented by one of the lesser-known, and, perhaps, the best of Joseph Haydn's London Symphonies, whose history is linked to a curious tale about a falling chandelier, a crowd of people and a miraculous escape from harm.
