Sinfonietta Rīga 18th Season's Opening

In 1791, when Joseph Haydn first visited London, he was welcomed with great enthusiasm – the Viennese master had plenty of admirers among musicians and politicians, merchants and scholars, and even in the royal family. The festive, elegant and witty Symphony No. 93 in D major – the first of his twelve "London symphonies" – was received with standing ovations.

Albion's foggy metropolis was also the launching pad of the splendid career of the special guest of Sinfonietta Rīga's 18th season opening concert, accordionist Ksenija Sidorova. Her mastery and passion for her instrument, and emotionally nuanced expression has inspired many composers, including Kyiv-born Sergey Akhunov, who has dedicated his Chaconne, composed four years ago, to the brilliant soloist.

Like Akhunov, Hiiumaa native Erkki-Sven Tüür became recognized as a rock musician first; to this day in his creative work, he crosses various "red lines" between genres with gusto. In his turn, Czech contemporary composer Ondřej Adámek looks for inspiration in far-away lands and innovative approaches to sound generation.
